FranÇois Girard

FranÇois Girard began his career in Montreal's art video and experimental film circuit. He would soon turn his attention to feature films. The first of these, CARGO, was followed by the internationally acclaimed THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD, and then by THE RED VIOLIN. In parallel, he also helmed the film adaptation of Gilles Maheu's LE DORTOIR, shot the concert film PETER GABRIEL'S SECRET WORLD, and directed THE SOUND OF CARCERI, one of six episodes of YO YO MA, INSPIRED BY BACH. In 1997 he made his debut as an opera director with SYMPHONY OF PSALMS and OEDIPUS REX, by Igor Stravinsky and Jean Cocteau. More recently, he directed the play NOVECENTO. These last two productions were performed to great acclaim at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival.

His many projects have received more than eighty international awards. THIRTY-TWO SHORT FILMS ABOUT GLENN GOULD and THE RED VIOLIN were the recipients of thirteen Genie Awards and nine Jutras Awards, while PETER GABRIEL'S SECRET WORLD received the Grammy Award for Best Music Film. An International Emmy, a Gold FIPA and a Gemeau were awarded to LE DORTOIR, and eight Dora awards went to OEDIPUS REX. He has twice won the Herald Angel at the Edinburgh Festival. And THE RED VIOLIN was awarded the Oscar for Best Original Soundtrack.
