Paul Schick

(Production Designer)Paul Schick was born in Chicago and grew up in Europe and the US, where he now lives. He has served on the directing staffs of the Vienna State Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, the Bavarian State Opera, the Salzburg Summer Festival, and the San Francisco Opera, working with such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Seiji Ozawa. He received his PhD in Musicology from Yale University, where he also played in Gamelan Jagat Anyar under the leadership of Michael Tenzer. He has directed both traditional and new operas, and is also active as a librettist, collaborating with composers to produce new musical works for the stage. His opera Sunburst with Dan Plonsey was premiered in 2000 at the opus415 music marathon in San Francisco. Upcoming collaborations include a Vietnam opera, The Pain Train, with composer Randy Woolf and performer Rinde Eckert. He is the Artistic Administrator at Boston Lyric Opera.
