Phil Kline was born in Pittsburgh and raised in Akron, Ohio. After studying Literature at Columbia he moved downtown where he played in rock bands with painters and made music with rooms full of tape recorders. This led to his appearance at the 1992 Marathon where he performed Bachman’s Warbler for harmonicas and 12 tape loops. The same year saw the premiere of Unsilent Night, his outdoor boombox sound sculpture which has been presented annually ever since in cities around the world. Recent compositions include The Blue Room and other stories for string quartet, the song cycle Zippo Songs and the choral mass John the Revelator.
