Timbila

TimbilaClick to Enlarge

Enter into the realm of the wild, surreal, indescribable TIMBILA music of Mozambique. Timbila are the beautiful buzzing xylophones of the Chopi tribe. A full timbila orchestra consists of up to 15 xylophones and 18 dancers. Civil wars and colonisation have virtually erased this kind of music. Nora Balaban, owner of Tribal Soundz world music store, traveled to Mozambique several times, to study with the great timbila master, Venancio Mbande. As a founding member of the downtown seven piece Afrodelic dance band, TIMBILA, Nora, along with Christine Bard and Jim Pugliese, strip down to a 3 piece, bring an East Village sensibility to the Chopi tradtions and crank out deep xylophone trance grooves.
