November

by: Allison Cameron

I'm an experimental composer, interested in limitations on gestures or sounds, and how a form unfolds over time. In November, the instrumentalists are limited to certain specific gestures and pitches, which create a particular sound world. It's different from my past work because it's sweeter, softer. I was conscious about a modal tonality, a context of material, drawing upon the ideas of folk or romantic music. It's not technically difficult, but it is an endurance thing, and the ALL-STARS do a fantastic job. Participating in BOAC has made me think about my place in the new music world. It is an amazing event, an incredible boost and then I come home to Canada and am isolated again. -Allison Cameron
